Al-Azhar institution issues statements condemning calls for Islamic protests while holding the Quran by the Salafists

Fatwa, posted 12.12.2014, from Cairo, Egypt, in:
The Al-Azhar sunni religious institution described calls by the Salafi Front for to stage protests in Cairo with the Quran as an “invitation for civil strife and treason to the homeland”. This followed calls from the Salafist group for Muslims to stage demonstrations while holding up the Quran to protest the current Egyptian’s government “sidelining” of Islamic values. Preacher Mohamed Al-Qadi said that Muslims should only be raising the Quran to spread peace and prosperity and not “to destroy and call for violence”, he added that “these ideologies are propagated by traitors and agents of other countries”.
