The Shia’a Marja Ayatollah Al-Sistani called on Iraqi citizens who are well and able to take up arms in order to fend of the terrorists and protect their country, people and holy places. He called on them to volunteer with the security forces.
Shia’a cleric Abdul Mahdi Al-Karbalai, the Shia’a Marja’s representative addressed worshippers during the Friday prayer sermon in relation to current events in Iraq. Al-Karbalai noted that citizens must be fully aware of the “great religious and national responsibility” placed upon everyone. Iraq and the Iraqi people are in front of a great challenge and an enormous threat, he added. Al-Karbalai said that the terrorists do not seek control of Ninawa and Saladine alone, but all of Iraq including Baghdad and the holy cities of Karbala and Al-Najaf. Al-Karbalai insisted that this duty is not limited to one sect but extends to all Iraqis for the sake of safeguarding its holy sites, its dignity and the unity of its people.
In an earlier statement released Wednesday by Ayatollah Al-Sistani, the cleric noted that the Shia’a Marja was following closely the developments in Ninawa and nearby areas with great concern. In his statement, Al-Sistani highlighted the importance of national unity and the imperativeness of the coming together of the Iraqi government and all political leaders in a single effort to counter the terrorist threat.
