Ayatollah Fadlallah's Opinion on Shaking Hand and Kissing the Opposite Sex

The principle is that it is prohibited to shake hands and kiss the opposite sex. This is because when Muslims wanted to express allegiance with the Prophet Muhammad, women did not touch his hands, but put their hands in a bowl of water, where also the Prophet put his hand at the same time. Furthermore, there is a hadith which says "a man shall not shake hands with a woman unless from over the clothes. "

However, if refraining from shaking hands with such person leads to a serious distress, it is permissible to shake hands. Such situation would be when the person would be in a position that, noting his or her surrounding conditions, he or she may not endure the situation. [This is because] Allah says: "He has not placed any unbearable difficulties on you."
