Can Sunni Muslims socially interact with Shias? Can they eat with them and go to their homes?

Fatwa Question or Essay Title:
Can Sunni Muslims socially interact with Shias? Can they eat with them and go to their homes?

The beliefs of Shias are contrary to the Ahl-e-Sunnah wal-Jamat. They hold abhorrent and repulsive beliefs regarding the sahaba (companions of the Prophet - Sallallahu Alaihi Walsallam); therefore they are considered a deviant sect. It is not good to befriend them and have relations with them. Otherwise, it is permissible to meet them on human grounds. Eating what they cook and in their homes is also permissible if one is sure that the food which they have cooked is free from any impure agents or ingredients. If there is any doubt that they have mixed some impure ingredients, as they are famous for doing, then one should refrain from eating in their houses.

For a contrasting opinion issued from the same institution, see the record entitled: 'Are all Shias considered non-Muslims?' Specifically on the issue of inter-marriage, see a more detailed opinion by Yusuf al-Qaradawi from Islam Online.
