Muslim Brotherhood member: Alliances with non-Muslim candidates is permissible

Summary: Dr. Abd el-Rahmaan al-Birr, a professor in the Knowledge of the Hadith (sayings of the Prophet Muhammad) at the University of Al-Azhar and member of the Muslim Brotherhood issued a fatwa about making alliances with non-Islamists.

He said that making alliances with candidates who do not carry the Islamic project or even with non-Muslim candidates is permissible, because it does not violate the Shari’a (Islamic Law) There is nothing wrong with Islamists collaborating with non-Islamists with whom they live in the same community in order to achieve certain goals, said Dr. Abd el-Rahmaan. What is not permissible, he said, “is to help a candidate, whose main concern is to fight against Shari’a and the Islamic project.” All candidates, he said must have the Shari’a as the main source of legislation in the constitution.
