The Washington-based NGO Freedom House has labeled Tunisia as a “free” Arab country and stated that it was a “notable exception” to degrading states of freedom in almost every region of the world. The rubric is based on human rights, political rights, and civil liberties, and Tunisia passed these categories to become the first free Arab nation since Lebanon before the outbreak of the 1975 Civil War.
