UN condemns sectarian violence in Libya as ‘alien’ to country’s tradition of tolerance

The United Nationals Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) recently issued a statement strongly condemning the murder of an Egyptian Coptic doctor and his family in the city of Sirte. The murders were said to be religiously motivated by the UN mission. This act of violence follows another event earlier this year in February when the bodies of seven Egyptian Coptic Christians were found near Benghazi, along with another incident near Benghazi where a group of over thirty Egyptian Copts were said to be abducted and tortured before eventually being released.
