Houcine Laabidi

Houcine Laabidi is the current imam of the Zeitunah Mosque in Tunis, Tunisia. He is known for his radical views on Islam and is a strong advocate of Islamic education in Tunisia. After the Zeitunah was allowed to reopen its education section, Laâbidi became increasingly visible in the media, especially after his call for the murder of Tunisian artists involved in the Abdelleya Exhibit in June 2012 in La Marsa, Tunisia. Arrested and interrogated, he was released a few days later. A supporter of the current Ennahdha government, he was criticized when referring to the party president, Rached Ghannouchi, with the term “radhiya allahou ‘anhou” usually used to designate the Prophet’s companions.
