Kazem al-Husseini al-Haeri

Grand Ayatollah Kazem al-Husseini al-Haeri is a key cleric in the resistance struggle in Iraq. He studied jurisprudence at the hands of Ayatollah Ahmood al-Shaharwardi, and his writings involve themes of religion and politics, including a book co-authored by Ayatollah Baqir al-Sadr on deriving legal principles. During the struggle against Saddam Hussein and the Baath regime he issued a handbook for the mujahidiin (liberation fighters). In 2003, he issued a statement allowing the killing of senior Baathists, rejecting the temporary American-led administration as illegitimate, and calling American forces as an occupation not a liberation. He was born in Iran and moved to Iraq in early childhood.
