Ahmed El-Tayyeb (b. Qena, Southern Egypt) is the Grand Sheikh of Al-Azhar. His origins go back to Imam Hassan Ibn Ali Ibn Abi Taleb. This means he claims to be a descendent of Prophet Muhammed (SAW). He received his undergraduate, masters, and doctoral degrees from Al-Azhar University. Before becoming the Sheikh of Al-Azhar, he was the Grand Mufti and President of Al-Azhar University. Following the death of Mohamed Sayyed Tantawy, former Al-Azhar Grand Sheikh, he was appointed the Grand Sheikh in 2010.
