Mokhtar al-Jebali

Mokhtar al-Jebali, a preacher and teacher at Qur’anic schools in Tunis, received his training at the Zeitouna and formed the Tunisian Front of Islamic Associations in early March 2012 to unite those Tunisian organizations with an Islamic orientation.  Jebali and the Front first rose to national prominence two weeks afterward with the organization of a protest before the National Assembly in support of Islamic sharia.  The group later held protests against a video perceived to insult Islam and in support of women’s right to wear the veil.  Jebali further gained notice for calling on the Minister of Defense to recruit young Tunisian men for jihad in Syria and for renouncing the 2014 ratification of constitutional articles.
