The Badr Organization is an affiliate of the Shi’ite Islamic Supreme Council of Iraq (ISCI). Prior to the 2003, the group, composed of some 10,000 Iranian-trained militiamen, called itself the Badr Brigades. It changed its name to the “Badr Organization for Reconstruction and Development” in the aftermath of the US-led crackdown on militias and vowed to disarm and become a civilian entity. The organization has been represented in Iraq’s parliament and many of its members have been incorporated in to Iraqi’s official defense forces. However, the group is still widely believed to operate militarily and continues to be referred to by most as the military wing of the ISCI.
