The Iraqi Transitional Government operated from May 2005 to May 2006, replacing the interim government that has been in place since 2004 under the auspices of the United States and coalition forces. One of the primary functions of the Transitional Government was to draft a new Iraqi constitution. In May 2006, the Interim Government was replaced by Iraq’s first permanent, democratically elected government.
