The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) acts as an official ruling body of Iraq’s northern Kurdish federal region via its parliament, often called the “Iraqi-Kurdish parliament.” Under Iraq’s Constitution, the KRG manages the local affairs of the Kurdish region (whose exact borders have yet to be defined, especially around the oil-rich Kirkuk area); Kurdish politicians are also represented in the general Iraqi parliament. The current president of the KRG is Massoud Barzani, head of the Kurdish Democratic Party (KDP), and its prime minister is Barham Salih, a member of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK). The Peshmerga are the authorized armed forces of the KRG, and have fought alongside the United States since 2003.
